Apple announces the new iPhone 12 range!

iPhone 12

Following the second Apple Event on Tuesday evening, Apple have announced four brand-new, 5G compatible smartphones: the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. These devices are due to launch the 17th October and the 6th November.

During the event, Apple announced their latest chipset – the A14 Bionic. The A14 Bionic is the new fastest, most powerful chipset found in a smartphone, taking the crown from its predecessor – the A13 Bionic – released in 2019. As well as introducing a new powerful chipset, the iPhone 12 sports a Super XDR Display screen and the new Ceramic Shield front glass which offers four times more resistance to damage from drops than other screens.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini are available in five different colours, with a beautiful aluminium finish. These colours include Blue, Green, Black, White and (PRODUCT) RED. Let’s take a look at how they compare to their predecessors:

In terms of the design, the iPhone 12 offers the same screen size as the iPhone 11, but is 11% thinner, 15% smaller, and 16% lighter, whilst offering 5G capabilities, faster processing power and a higher screen resolution. Despite rumours of a 120Hz iPhone, the iPhone 12 still sports the same 60Hz display, but offers the all new Ceramic Shield mentioned above.

Surprisingly, the iPhone 12 Mini offers exactly the same features, just in a smaller, more pocket-friendly design. In fact, the iPhone 12 Mini is the smallest 5G phone currently available in the market. It’s worth noting that the iPhone 11 is still part of Apple’s current smartphone line up starting from £599 compared to the starting price of £699 for the iPhone 12 Mini and the starting price of £799 for the iPhone 12.

Unlike the iPhone 12 compared to the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max are slightly bigger in size than last years flagship handset. The iPhone 12 Pro offers a 0.3-inch increase in screen size from the 11 Pro, whilst the iPhone 12 Pro Max offers a 0.2-inch increase from the 11 Pro Max.

Just like the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini, the two flagship devices also have a 60Hz display with the all new Ceramic Shield screen. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are available in Graphite, Silver, Gold and Pacific Blue.

Another interesting new feature is the introducing to MagSafe across the whole iPhone 12 range. MagSafe is the magnetic technology Apple has previously used with their MacBook power cables which allowed users to pull the cable out without causing damage to it. However, MagSafe within the iPhone 12 doesn’t focus on the charger or charging port – though the iPhone 12 does still use a Lightning cable, not USB-C like people were expecting – but instead is hidden on the back of the device. This allows you to buy accessories – such as magnetic cases and wireless chargers – which snap firmly to the back of the iPhone.

So, you may be wondering if you should upgrade your handset to an iPhone 12. Well, unfortunately there’s no right or wrong answer we can give you. It all depends on your usage, your current handset, and your budget. If you can afford the premium price tag, then the iPhone 12 range is clearly going to be the best Apple handset available.
